828,000 workers are suffering from work-related stress, depression or anxiety which costs employers a loss of 17.9 million working days annually. This highlights the severity of the issue and how the lack of attendance has the potential to hinder the achievement of business targets. The national health service defines stress as the body's reaction to feeling threatened or under pressure. A little stress can have benefits such as generate motivation to complete tasks and meet targets. However too much pressure is counterproductive as it can decrease productivity levels as a result of a depletion in physical and/or mental well-being. The impact of stress on business:

 Recommendations to reduce workplace-related stress: 

  • Take the necessary measures to encourage well-being such as access to mental health tools (i.e., confidential onsite or distance therapy), and flexible working contracts
  • Provide a comfortable workspace - if the environment employees are working in is comfortable and positive then they are more likely to push through difficult tasks as well as work productively
  • Encourage physical activity as exercise releases feel-good endorphins that make you happier but also aid sleep and relaxation which reduces stress
  • Remember to recognize good work as simple words of affirmation and appraisal can help employees to feel appreciated which increases positivity and provides motivation which aids productivity
  • Most importantly, recognize the early signs of stress to be able to immediately support employees and develop individual strategies to work through it
